Ventrillo or Teamspeak
Do I need them both?
I've used Teamspeak before but not Ventrillo. Can I connect to a Ventrillo server with Teamspeak? Doubtful but who knows.
Is Ventrillo to Teamspeak as Trillian is to AIM?

They're separate voice communication programs. You can't connect to a Vent server with TeamSpeak or vice versa. I've personally used both and found that I enjoy Ventrillo much more. Better quality and features in my humble opinion. It is however useful to have both installed if you plan on playing with pick up groups or what not, never know what someone's gonna use.
The one major difference between Teamspeak and Ventrillo is that on Teamspeak you can see all the servers and on Ventrillo you need to know the server address and port number, you can't just look at a list and pick. This makes Vent servers a bit harder to find and hack, which I've been told is a pretty common problem with Teamspeak.

Vent has better codecs, actaully announces who joins, lets you play sound clips...Etc etc.
But I guess that dosn't matter for a pug group.

Actually TS has the better codecs as Ive run a server for both at one time or another and both have announce and depart sounds. Also Ts is more cpu intensive and less bandwidth intensive than Ventrilo, Where as ventrilo is just the opposite it uses more bandwidth and less cpu, thats why alot of people have the server on there game computer. I use a separate computer to run Teamspeak 2 better sound and thruput that way. Both have their places tho.

Teamspeak is better for 2 Reasons:
1 - Channel Commander: Channel Commander allows multiple channel leaders to talk to eachother via whispers and coordinate multiple groups of ppl at once (useful for massive PVP games like shadowbane)
2 - Teamspeak has alot more user options reguarding voice, op, and channel configs
Codecs are different but essentially the same (ventrillo makes everyone sound like a girl and teamspeak has more compatibility problems)

I agree with your 2 points there Shazbawt.
IRT Boris: I rent a voice server from Game Daemons and the quality is alot better 44100 Hz 16 bit versus the Speex 25.9 Kbit. Bandwitdth isn't an issue if you're renting a server.
What I found annoying was the fact that TS only says "New Player" or something to that effect, whereas Vent can actaully tell you who joined, so you don't have to minimize the game to see it. (That's assuming the user set it phonetically).
I'm old school vent I suppose. Been using it since way back in my counter strike days.

Vent client is free, getting teamspeak is basically paying your monthly fee. Good job.

*little tip I've learned*
What is it you can say in vent/ts that you just can't use this game's PERFECT communication auto system with?
*target Calling* - ctrl+space
*path drawing* - use compass
*skill calling* - ctrl + click skill on bar or press skill button
*advanced formation* - ping compass, draw
*skill combo announcements* - same as skill calling...
*hp/sp reserves* - ctrl + click ur respective bars
*condition announcement* ctrl + click it on ur upperleft corner
*hexes on you* same thing
*announce dp/mb* same thing...
For perfect control, I almost always play my game with left-ctrl key held down about 90% of the time.
Seriously speaking *no pun*, what can speaking to your teammates via voice do that the game's ingame comm system can't?
I'm not saying it's bad at all, but I'm getting frustrated with LOTS of people who join my group, discover we don't have TS/Vent and then just say "sorry, gotta go suckers"...
*satisfying thing I noticed is that when I see them in arena/tombs/pvp, my group beats them and I simply whisper... 'see ya later sucker'*
Speaking isn't bad, but NOT having vent/TS shouldn't be a reason to insult/offend someone.

1 vote for TS here - but its a very long running arguement. In the end, they are both good.

Vent > TS
Vent sounds WAY more clearer than TS ever could. The only instance where it doesnt is if you join a crappy vent server thats running low codecs.

the codec depends on what the server can handle. I own a vent server (paid for it) and i simply love it. I have been on other TS servers with a crappy codec and everyone sounded like they have a pillow in front of them. IMO vent. is better. Then again TS has a very round look, perhaps that is why all the "special" people use it.. safety first eh?

You know I have to agree. I tried getting in groups for HoH and Arena's. People did not invite me because I didn't have TS/Vent. Speaking to teammates is fine I suppose, but I have a ton of things going on in my life that I need to. Multi tasking for only a game to listen to teammates and focus solely on my game would cause major problems. When I play with groups I stay focused but I also have things to worry about. My multi tasking doesn't include teammspeak as well as other things. Hell it's bad enough my wife doesn't like it when I play games when she isn't working. So when she does talk to me, or I have an important phone call, worry about my dog, and all the other crap going on ts/vent is not priority. God help me if I try talking to other people while playing a game, listening to my wife, dog, phone calls, etc. etc. It's hard enough and I don't even had kids yet.
I personally think if you have buddies and want to use vent/ts its fine. But I also feel that it's been a source of discrimination to those who don't have or don't use for whatever reasons.
/sigh
